Natural remedies & lifestyle tips
- Wear a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, even when it's cloudy. Sun is the biggest driver of dark spots and lines.
- Cleanse gently, then put on moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp.
- Add one new active ingredient at a time, and patch test it on a small area for a few days first.
- Use retinol at night only, and wear sunscreen the next morning, because it can make skin more sensitive to the sun.
- Give it time. A dark spot can take 6 to 12 months to fade, even with good care.
- See a dermatologist for any spot that changes, bleeds or doesn't heal, or if dryness won't go away.
What each ingredient is for
These are cosmetic ingredients. They change how skin looks and feels; they don't treat skin conditions.
- Vitamin C: an antioxidant used to brighten the look of dull skin and uneven tone.
- Niacinamide: used to even out the look of tone and the appearance of pores.
- Hyaluronic acid: holds water, so skin feels more hydrated and plump.
- Retinol: smooths the look of texture and fine lines over time. Night use only; ask your doctor first if pregnant or nursing.
- Kojic acid and azelaic acid: dermatologists list these among over-the-counter options for fading the look of dark spots.
- Peptides: short chains of amino acids used in creams to support the look of firmer, smoother skin.
